To reactivate an expired MLO license, your employer must initiate the process in NMLS between January 1 and February 28. Completing overdue Continuing Education (CE), confirming your details, paying fees, and possibly undergoing a new background check are essential steps. The specific requirements depend on your state and the reason for license expiration, so timely action is critical.
Steps to Reinstate Your MLO License
-
- Check if Your State Participates: Visit the NMLS Reinstatement page to see if your state allows reinstatement during the January to February period.
-
- Finish Late CE Courses: Enroll in and complete any missed CE courses for the years you did not meet requirements. Ensuring these are completed and reported to NMLS helps you regain confidence in your licensing status. We have Late CE courses to make this fast and easy! https://aaamortgagetraining.com/product-category/late-ce/
-
- Log into your NMLS account and carefully review all your details, such as contact information and employment history, to ensure they are accurate and up to date for a smooth reinstatement or renewal process.
-
- Pay Fees: Pay all renewal and reinstatement fees, including any late fees or penalties required by your state.
-
- Ensure your fingerprints are current and check whether your state requires a new background check, as this varies by jurisdiction and affects your reinstatement process.
Important Notes
-
- Deadline is Strict: Meeting the December 31 deadline ensures your license remains active, helping you avoid interruptions. We’re here to support you through this process.
-
- Rules Vary by State: Requirements, fees, and whether you can reinstate your license depend on your state’s regulations.
Renewing and Reactivating MLO Registrations
Supporting your MLOs through the renewal or reactivation process helps them feel valued and confident in maintaining their licensing status.
After an institution renews its NMLS registration, it must verify each MLO’s records before completing the process. MLOs should confirm their details by December 31; failure to do so results in a status change to Inactive – Failed to Renew, requiring a reactivation request afterward.
Renewal period and reactivation
The renewal period runs from November 1 to December 31 each year. If an MLO misses the renewal, the institution can reactivate their registration at any time after January 1. The reactivation process is the same as renewal: submit the request, provide attestation, and make payment.
How to submit MLO renewals
Institutions can request renewal or reactivation in two ways:
-
- Manual selection: Best for smaller institutions with 100 or fewer MLOs. Uses a list to select individual MLOs.
-
- Upload: Needed when more than 100 MLOs need renewal. Institutions create a CSV file containing MLO IDs and optional group names, then upload it to the system. This method can handle up to 10,000 MLOs at once.
Steps for renewal or reactivation
1. The institution requests renewal or reactivation (by list or upload).
2. An invoice is generated, and the institution pays a fee of $35 per MLO.
3. MLOs get an email and must log in to confirm their records.
4. After attestation, the MLO’s status is updated to Active for the following year.
Monitoring and notifications
Institutions can track renewal progress via reports and receive nightly email updates on MLO attestations.
